Review
I thought this was a lovely little book. Read for the small press fiction book club that I’m in, I certainly would never have known or read something like this without that. I thought the ‘satire’ of it all was fairly surface, but I found that surface very pleasant. The writing is a bit whimsical, and the wordplay pleased me something terrible. I also found it oddly musical (particularly the recurrent, ‘While You Were Out’).
The book club was a bit split, but generally positive!
A few things I found interesting: - Human Harold - One Big Bank - Practicing lying to yourself - The boyfriends (very wholesome) - “Qualified for happiness?” I really liked this, I am not sure I’ve ever felt qualified for happiness. - The whole ‘Home Work’ section
The book club had some recommendations / references / etc: - Fantasmas (J Torres) - George Saunders - Grendel (J Gardner) - I Who Have Never Known Men (J Harpman) - Severence (L Ma, but also the TV show from D Erickson) - The Rehearsal season 1 (N Fielder) - The Good Place (M Schur)
